A new hotel in Abersoch is stirring mixed feelings among locals, with some excited and others concerned about its impact on the village’s charm
This development has been in the works for ages. Planning started almost ten years ago at the old Whitehouse Hotel site. That hotel was torn down in 2016 because locals thought it was an eyesore. Developers promised a new hotel by spring 2019, but that didn’t happen.
The project was picked up by Providence Gate Group Holdings. They aimed to start in 2020, but then Covid hit. Finally, last year, construction kicked off on this multi-million-pound project. It will have 42 hotel rooms and 18 apartments, with Bespoke Hotels managing it.
The site is taking shape near Lon Pont Morgan, in a village where beach huts can cost over £200,000. Recently, Ruben Owen shared a photo of the hotel on Facebook, and opinions flew in—both good and bad.
Some folks weren’t impressed. One person even likened it to “Benidorm,” which isn’t exactly a compliment for this upscale village. Others called it a “carbuncle on the landscape” or said it looked more like a resort in Portugal than Abersoch.
But not everyone is negative. Many are excited about new luxury tourism options. One person said, “Abersoch has needed something like this for years.” Another added, “It’ll look good when it’s finished.” People are also talking about the economic boost, with more jobs and tourism income.
Ruben himself is all for the new hotel. He believes it’s a fantastic addition that can create year-round jobs and attract visitors. He thinks this project is a big step up from the old, abandoned site that was there before.
The hotel is set to open later this year, and it seems like it could bring some positive changes to Abersoch.
