A family in Cardiff shares how garden sheds became cozy retreats for their daughters, offering them privacy and independence.
When the Wilkinsons moved into their home in Gabalfa, it needed a lot of work. They had a static caravan, but it was falling apart. So, they decided to demolish it after a party.
With limited budget for renovations, they couldn’t add more bedrooms. Then, a family member suggested the idea of garden cabins. The girls loved it!
Years later, the property is on the market, and Megan’s house tour video has gone viral. It’s had over a million views!
The idea came from Nicola’s dad. After some research, they pitched it to the girls, who were thrilled. Megan’s friends thought it was cool, and that’s how it became known as “the shed.”
Megan shared that she had friends over for “shed parties” when her parents were away. The cabins were actually nice log cabins, not just regular sheds. They had double-glazing and a locking door.
Ross, the dad, built the foundations and set up electricity. Nicola said the girls were so excited when the first cabin was ready.
Living in the cabins was a fun adventure. The first night, they carried their duvets into the snow! Ross had to shovel them out the next morning.
Megan, now 21, has great memories of her time in the cabin. She said it was never cold, thanks to the oil heaters. She loved having her own space and could watch movies without bothering anyone.
Even though she’s moved out, she still cherishes those memories. Her viral video sparked many questions, like how they managed bathroom trips. But it was never an issue for them.
The family felt safe in their community, leaving the back door open for the girls. The garden was secure, and the cabins locked.
Ross mentioned that the girls mostly stayed in the house, using the cabins for privacy and study.
With more people looking for extra space at home, the couple has advice for others considering garden cabins. Ross suggests insulating them for warmth.
They’ve put a lot of effort into renovating their home and are now moving to a more rural area. Their house is on the market for £325,000.
Nicola will miss Gabalfa, especially the friendly community. The house has become popular since it was listed, with many eager to view it.
Ross said the new owners can decide what to do with the cabins. They could be used as a gym, bar, or office.
Megan loved her shed and has many amazing memories. She believes it was the best decision her parents ever made.
