Bangkok: Every year, tons of Brits flock to Thailand for a holiday. But this surge of tourists is stressing popular spots like Phuket and Pattaya.

Places like Maya Bay are facing environmental issues and overcrowding. But there’s a charming little island in the Gulf of Thailand that’s still a hidden treasure.

Koh Mak is home to just 1,200 residents and keeps its natural beauty intact. It’s a small island, only 16 square kilometers, with most of it privately owned.

There’s just one cash machine and no tall buildings. Travel blogger Gregor Brown calls it an “untouched paradise.”

In a YouTube video, he said, “Koh Mak is quaint. Picture a tropical island with beautiful beaches and no crowds. Sounds unreal, right? But it’s real.”

This island only started welcoming tourists in 1985.

Gregor describes it as a glimpse into what Thailand was like 50 years ago. He said, “Koh Mak feels like a time capsule, with dusty roads and shops selling gas in bottles.”

You’ll find beaches, coconut trees, and even pineapple plants. It’s not one of those flashy Instagram islands; it’s perfect for slow mornings.

Koh Mak opened up to tourism when coconut plantation owner Jakrapad Taveteekul built simple huts for visitors.

The island is serious about protecting the environment. Around 40 resorts and 20 restaurants have signed a charter to promote eco-friendly activities like kayaking and cycling.

They’re also cutting down on plastic use, banning styrofoam containers and plastic straws. Some resorts even grow their own fruits and veggies.

To keep the island peaceful, resorts have rules, like no loud music after 10 PM. This lets visitors enjoy the real Thai experience, exploring tiny temples and the main pier.
