Despite resigning over serious allegations, the ex-council chief still sponsors a Ukrainian refugee, raising concerns about his involvement.
Cammy Day is listed under the UK Government’s Homes for Ukraine program. This initiative helps vulnerable refugees find homes with hosts across the country. So far, around 18,700 Ukrainians have been accommodated in Scotland. Hosts can receive between £350 and £500 a month from the government.
Day has a Ukrainian refugee living in one of his four properties in Edinburgh. He quit as council leader last month after reports surfaced about him sending explicit messages to refugees. The council has checked on the refugee’s welfare, but many are questioning why Day is still part of the scheme.
Simita Kumar, the SNP group leader, expressed concern for the safety of vulnerable adults. She believes Day should step down from the program immediately. There’s also an ongoing investigation into Day’s properties, as he’s not registered as a landlord for one of them.
Day’s register shows he part-owns three properties in Edinburgh. Officials are looking into whether he’s acting as a landlord and profiting from tenants. Sources close to him claim the tenant is a relative and that he doesn’t receive any money from them.
Meanwhile, a police investigation is underway regarding his inappropriate behavior, including his messages to Ukrainian refugees. Disclosure Scotland stated that it’s up to organizations to ensure hosts are suitable. The council has not commented, and Day has not responded to inquiries.
