Falkirk: Michelle Thomson, the MSP for Falkirk East, is stepping up to help Kinneil Museum. The museum is facing closure due to funding cuts from Falkirk Council.

Located in Bo’ness, Kinneil Museum is a gateway to the Kinneil Estate. It showcases 2000 years of history, from Roman times to the industrial era.

The council plans to shut the museum in September unless a group steps in to cover its costs. This has left many in the community worried.

Last week, the Friends of Kinneil expressed their frustration over the council’s decision. They pointed out that the museum is vital for visitors to Kinneil House and the estate.

The estate features 200 acres of parkland, part of the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site. The museum also provides essential visitor facilities, like restrooms.

Falkirk Council is working on a strategic plan for Kinneil Estate with Historic Environment Scotland, which oversees Kinneil House.

Thomson praised the Friends of Kinneil for their dedication. She met with them recently to discuss their concerns about the museum’s future.

She emphasized that Kinneil House and the estate hold national significance, not just local importance. Thomson is committed to finding a solution.

While the council faces tough financial choices, she’s ready to help connect the right people to keep the museum open.

Thomson is also looking into additional funding for culture and the arts from the Scottish Government’s budget.

The Friends group criticized the council for moving forward with the closure before reviewing the estate’s overall plan. They believe it’s premature.

However, the council insists the museum can only remain open if there’s a community asset transfer or a significant financial turnaround.

They’ve had talks with the Friends of Kinneil and Historic Environment Scotland but haven’t received any formal proposals yet.

A council spokesperson said they’re open to discussions to help keep the museum operational. Historic Environment Scotland is also in talks about the museum’s future.
