Eryri: Big news for the area! The local council has decided to limit holiday homes. This is a huge win for housing campaigners. They want other councils to follow suit.

Starting June 1, 2025, you’ll need planning permission to turn a home into a holiday let. This move aims to help locals find affordable housing. Right now, over 17% of homes in Eryri are second homes or rentals.

People are worried about rising house prices and the impact on communities. The new rules are part of a broader strategy, including council tax changes and stricter rules for holiday lets.

Some folks are not happy about this. They argue it limits property rights and could mess with the housing market. But many locals feel it’s necessary to keep their communities alive.

Cllr Edgar Wyn Owen, the ENPA chair, believes this is a game-changer. He says it’s a historic day for Eryri and a step towards a better future for everyone.

He pointed out that many people are being priced out of their own neighborhoods. This new direction will help manage how many homes are used for short-term rentals.

Welsh language group Cymdeithas yr Iaith is also on board. They want other councils in Wales to adopt similar measures. Anglesey and Conwy are already looking into it.

Last summer, Carmarthenshire started researching this issue too. But some councils are worried about the costs and staffing needed to implement these changes.

Dr. Jeff Smith from Cymdeithas yr Iaith sees Eryri’s decision as a crucial first step. He hopes it will improve housing availability for locals.

He also reminded everyone that the housing crisis is a nationwide issue. It’s disappointing that only two out of 25 councils in Wales are taking action. They’ll keep pushing for more councils to step up.

Just a heads up, the new rules won’t affect existing holiday homes before June 2025. So, there’s still time for those properties.
