A recent poll shows strong support among Scots for better recycling services and investment in local collections to improve recycling rates.
Edinburgh: A new poll reveals that seven in ten Scots want a big change in recycling. They’re calling for more investment in local collections. It seems many folks feel we’re lagging behind Wales, where recycling rates are much higher.
Currently, Scotland’s household recycling rate is just 43.5%. That’s a far cry from Wales’ impressive 66.6%. The poll, conducted by Survation, asked 1,024 Scots about their recycling views. It shows a clear desire for better services.
People are also eager for a long-awaited Deposit Return Scheme. This scheme was supposed to launch in Scotland but got blocked last year. Now, there’s talk of a UK-wide plan, but it’s been pushed back to 2027.
Tom Giddings from Alupro highlighted how much Scots care about the environment. He believes that better local collections are essential for recycling success. He also stressed the importance of the deposit return scheme in driving this recycling revolution.
The Scottish government has laid out a new five-year plan to improve recycling services. This includes ideas like kerbside collections for textiles, which could help reduce waste. They’re also looking to give councils more tools to boost recycling efforts.
It’s clear that many Scots are ready for change. They want to see action that benefits both people and the planet. With the right support, Scotland could lead the way in recycling.
