Scots are invited to participate in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend, helping to track bird populations and support wildlife.
Edinburgh: This weekend, Scots are being asked to join the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch. It’s a great way to help nature while having some fun.
Last year, around 40,000 people in Scotland counted over 80,000 birds from nearly 50 species. This shows how important our gardens are for wildlife.
This year, researchers want to see how the recent cold weather affected bird behavior. The event runs from January 24-26, and it’s super simple.
All you need to do is spend an hour watching birds in your garden or a local park. Just take notes on what you see. It’s a great excuse to relax and enjoy nature.
Anne McCall, the RSPB Scotland director, said it’s a highlight of January. She loves how it connects people with wildlife. Plus, it’s a nice way to brighten your day.
Beccy Speight, the RSPB chief executive, mentioned that many garden birds are in decline. There are 38 million fewer birds than there were 50 years ago. That’s a big drop!
So, if you’re free this weekend, grab a cup of tea, sit back, and enjoy some birdwatching. You’ll be helping to gather important data for our feathered friends.
