Maesteg: A teacher at Maesteg School had a rough day. Danielle Fleming, known for her talent, passed out after drinking vodka. She was supposed to supervise a GCSE exam but ended up incoherent and slumped over.

The head teacher found her in a bad state, smelling strongly of alcohol. It was around 8:30 AM, just an hour after she arrived at school. Staff had to take her to the deputy head’s office.

Fleming had a bag with vodka in the classroom. It’s unclear if she drank before coming to work or during school hours. She had taken some time off earlier in the year but returned after getting support.

When the head teacher described her condition, it was alarming. Fleming was found asleep with vomit on her clothes. The head teacher said it was overwhelming.

Fleming had been a beloved teacher since 2007, becoming head of expressive arts in 2021. She was well-regarded by students and staff. But the head teacher noted that Fleming seemed to struggle with confidence after her promotion.

On the day of the incident, Fleming let down her students. Thankfully, other teachers stepped in to help the students succeed.

Fleming admitted to drinking at school and was also convicted of drink-driving later. Her representative said she was going through a tough time and is now in recovery.

The hearing continues as the school community grapples with the implications of this incident.
