A man threatened his partner with horrific violence, leaving her injured and terrified after a series of assaults fueled by drugs and alcohol.
The first attack occurred last May. McGonagle came home late, kissed his partner, and then took a shower. But things took a dark turn around 3 AM. He woke her up shouting, “It’s D Day,” and accused her of cheating.
His behavior was alarming. He punched the air and verbally abused her. Then he struck her in the head, knocking her out. When she regained consciousness, he was looming over her, making horrific threats. She was too scared to move, staying in bed until morning.
Three days later, she reported the assault. McGonagle was arrested but released on bail with orders not to contact her. However, he showed up at her home weeks later with flowers and kebabs. They drank together, but things escalated quickly.
He accused her of taking his alcohol and became aggressive. He shoved her into the sink, causing pain. The situation worsened, and he grabbed her throat, making it hard for her to breathe. He threw her to the floor, resulting in a serious arm injury.
After the attack, she was taken to the hospital, where doctors found a fractured arm and other injuries. McGonagle, living in Adamsdown, Cardiff, later pleaded guilty to serious charges.
In court, the victim shared her pain, saying she’s still struggling to cope. She feels her life has been ruined and described the experience as degrading. She never expected this from someone she loved.
The judge sentenced McGonagle to three years in prison and imposed a restraining order. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the impact of domestic violence.
