TikTok may shut down this Sunday unless President Biden takes action to prevent the ban following a Supreme Court ruling
Washington: TikTok is in a tight spot. The app will “go dark” this Sunday if President Biden doesn’t step in. The Supreme Court just upheld a ban on the app unless it’s sold by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
About 170 million Americans are on edge. Content creators worry about their jobs, while users are anxious about losing access to their favorite app. It’s a big deal for many.
Back in April, Biden signed a law that could ban TikTok unless it’s sold within a year. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said TikTok should stay available but under American ownership to address security concerns.
Trump, who has a huge following on TikTok, said he needs time to think about the situation. He mentioned that he had a good call with China’s leader, Xi Jinping, discussing TikTok among other topics.
He also said he would make a decision on TikTok soon but needs to review everything first. Meanwhile, ByteDance has denied plans to sell TikTok, but some investors are interested in taking over its US operations.
There’s talk that a sale could lead to a grace period for TikTok, even after the law kicks in. The Supreme Court has made it clear that the law doesn’t violate users’ rights, which is a relief for many.
