Scotland is bracing for a fierce storm with 80mph winds and snow expected this Friday, prompting weather warnings across the region.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the entire west coast. We’re talking about some serious winds, with gusts reaching up to 80mph in certain areas. Coastal spots and high ground will feel the worst of it, but even inland, winds of 50-60mph are expected.
As the storm rolls in, it’s not just wind we need to worry about. Heavy rain and snow are also on the way. By Friday morning, a blanket of snow could cover much of Scotland.
The storm is coming from the Atlantic, moving up from Wales and Ireland. Northern Ireland is also under a weather alert, so it’s not just Scotland that needs to be cautious.
The warning is in effect from midnight Friday until noon Saturday. It stretches from the English border, through Dumfries and Glasgow, all the way to Orkney.
Everywhere in western Scotland, including the Inner and Outer Hebrides, is included in this warning zone. The Met Office is serious about this one, saying there’s a “danger to life” from falling debris and huge waves along the coast.
Travel could be a mess too. Expect delays and cancellations on roads, railways, and even air and ferry services.
Chris Almond, a Deputy Chief Meteorologist, mentioned that this storm could be quite disruptive. Winds will start picking up on Thursday night, with the worst gusts hitting on Friday.
So, keep an eye on the weather updates. The Met Office is warning that this storm could develop rapidly, and we might even see a named storm soon.
Stay safe out there, and make sure to check your local forecasts as the week goes on.
