Wildlife experts have shared news on the lynx found in the Highlands, now safe at Edinburgh Zoo after their illegal release.
Edinburgh: Wildlife experts have given an update on the lynx that were illegally released in the Highlands. These big cats are currently in quarantine at Edinburgh Zoo.
Four lynx were spotted near Kingussie on January 8. People saw them roaming around, which led to a big search. Thankfully, they were captured safely in pairs a couple of days later.
Sadly, one lynx didn’t make it after being caught. The cause of death is still unknown, and police are looking into how these animals ended up in the Highlands.
On a brighter note, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) said the three surviving lynx are doing well. They’re in quarantine for 30 days at the zoo. The RZSS has also received over £13,000 in donations to help care for them.
The society is asking for more help. Just £15 a day can feed one lynx, while £150 covers their vet care. A spokesperson mentioned that the donations are really appreciated.
Experts are relieved that there are likely no more lynx on the loose. However, they warned that this illegal release could spark more rogue rewilding efforts in Scotland.
Conservationist Peter Cairns called the release “irresponsible.” He believes that nature agencies should be ready for similar incidents in the future.
Farmers in the area are concerned and want action taken against those responsible. The National Farmers Union Scotland has called for a manhunt to find the culprits.
In a letter to the Scottish government, NFU Scotland president Martin Kennedy urged for resources to investigate this wildlife crime. He emphasized that those responsible should face consequences.
For those who want to help, donations to the RZSS crowdfunder are welcome. Every bit helps in caring for these beautiful animals.
